Broad beans are strictly a cool-season crop in the subtropics: sow the seed direct in autumn, from April through June, and no later. Around Toowoomba and the inland ranges behind Brisbane they perform best, as they need the mild, frost-tolerant conditions of a subtropical winter and simply rot or refuse to set pods once humidity and heat return. Push seed 40 to 50mm deep into moist soil and expect germination in 10 to 20 days. Give them full sun and a soil that is not freshly manured; too much nitrogen produces lush leaf and few pods. The taller varieties will need support, as coastal winds off the Sunshine Coast can flatten a laden row. Water at the base and keep the foliage dry.
