Cardamom Leaf (shell ginger) is right at home in the tropics and can be established in any month of the year, as it thrives in the frost-free heat of Cairns and Darwin. Raise divisions or seedlings and transplant them out, setting the crown 10 mm below the surface; seed is slow and erratic, germinating over 30–60 days. Space clumps 30–60 cm apart in rows 60 cm apart. This is a permanent, clumping perennial rather than a season crop — give it a full year to establish before you harvest the aromatic leaves heavily.

Shell ginger loves warmth, humidity and moist, rich soil, which makes the tropical wet season a friend rather than an enemy for once. The broad leaves are used to wrap and steam food and lend a gingery, lemony aroma.

The main failure mode here is not rot but drought and exposure. In the long dry season the leaf margins scorch brown and the clump looks tatty if it is left to dry out or sits in full, harsh afternoon sun. Plant in dappled light or morning sun, mulch heavily, and keep the root zone damp through the dry months. Wind is the other enemy: the tall canes tear and shred in cyclone-season gusts, so a sheltered spot pays off.
