Sow cosmos direct from July to October, scattering seed 10–15 mm deep into warm, well-drained soil as the dry season runs its course in Townsville, Mackay and Broome. Seed germinates in 7–14 days and plants flower in 80–100 days, so a dry-season sowing gives you colour before the wet returns. Space plants around 50 cm apart in rows 45–60 cm apart, because cosmos branches wide and tall. It thrives on neglect and poor soil, and actually flowers better without rich feeding. The main failure mode here is flopping and rot in humidity.
