Sow godetia direct from March to August through the cool inland autumn and winter, which is the workable window before the desert summer arrives. This hardy annual actually prefers cool growing conditions, so timing it away from the heat is key. Sow the seed about 5 mm deep, where it germinates in 14–28 days, and thin plants to 30 cm apart in rows 30 cm wide. Expect its satin, cup-shaped flowers in around 80–100 days. In Mildura and Broken Hill, godetia performs best in a bright, open spot with lean soil, resenting rich beds far more than it resents the cold.

The second failure mode is over-rich, over-watered soil. Godetia flowers best when a little stressed. Grow it in lean, free-draining soil, water only moderately, and skip the extra feed.
