Oregano is sown direct from May to August in the tropical zone, giving it the whole dry season to establish before humidity returns. Sow 5 mm deep and be flexible about timing your patience — germination ranges anywhere from 10 to 28 days — with plants ready to pick at 80 to 90 days. In Broome or Mackay, an early sowing in May means harvesting from August onward, when the plant's flavour oils are at their most concentrated. Give each plant a generous 50 cm; oregano spreads into a low mat and crowded, airless clumps are the first to rot.

The May-to-August window lets you choose your emphasis: sow in May in Broome or Mackay for a long harvest running into spring, or as late as August if you mainly want an established plant to trial through the following wet. Either way the picking rhythm matters — regular trims keep the mat dense and young, and the leaves you cut just before any flower buds open carry the strongest flavour, so harvest hard in the late dry and dry or freeze the surplus.

Grow it lean. Full sun, sandy or gravelly free-draining soil, no rich compost and minimal fertiliser — pampered oregano grows lush, mild-flavoured and rot-prone, which in this climate is a triple failure. Water to establish seedlings during their slow 10-to-28-day germination and first weeks, then taper right off; an established dry-season plant needs little beyond occasional deep drinks. Rows at 30–45 cm let air move between plants.

Wet-season survival is the recurring failure point: the dense mat traps moisture at soil level and the plant melts into black rot during the monsoon. Improve the odds by shearing the clump low and thinning it hard in October, growing on a mound or in a pot that can shelter under an eave, and accepting that in the wettest coastal gardens oregano is simply resown each May.
