Rocket can be sown direct in the arid zone in every month except February, 4 mm deep, and it is one of the fastest rewards in the garden — up in 6–12 days and cuttable in 30–60. That February gap tells you everything about growing it here: peak summer heat sends rocket straight to seed, so the cooler you can keep it, the longer it stays leafy and mild. From March through to spring it is close to effortless in Mildura or Port Augusta gardens; through summer it is a sprint crop you sow in shade and harvest young.

Rocket's whole arid-zone strategy is speed and succession. A single plant is short-lived here, so stop thinking in plants and think in rows: sow a metre every two to three weeks, cut leaves young, and pull plants the moment flower stems appear. In the cool months that rhythm gives continuous salad with almost no effort, and being hardy, rocket grows straight through frosty inland winters — a Broken Hill July sowing will just move at the slower end of its 30–60 day range.

Heat is the failure mode, and it arrives two ways. First, bolting: warm-season sowings can throw flower stems within weeks, especially after a hot, dry day or a missed watering. Second, flavour — heat- or drought-stressed rocket turns from pleasantly peppery to aggressively hot and bitter. Both have the same fix: 30–50% shade cloth over warm-season rows, mulch between plants, and light, frequent watering so the shallow roots never dry. During December and January treat it as a three-to-four-week baby-leaf crop and expect nothing more; the February pause in the sowing calendar exists because even that stops working.

Seed sown 4 mm deep in warm soil can be up in under a week, so failed patches cost you nothing — resow immediately rather than nursing stressed plants along.
