Sow rockmelon direct from February to September in tropical Australia, pushing seed about 15 mm into warm, mounded soil. Seedlings show in 8–16 days and fruit needs 100–120 days, so a March or April sowing around Townsville or Broome ripens melons through the heart of the dry season, when low humidity concentrates sugar instead of feeding rot. Give the vines real space — 90–120 cm apart with 130–160 cm between rows — because tropical growth is rampant. The window's two ends behave very differently. From May onward you are sowing into the dry: irrigate deeply once or twice a week at the base of the plant and mulch thickly, keeping mulch clear of the stem.

Powdery mildew is the crop's standard failure in the tropics. It arrives on older leaves mid-season, strips the canopy and leaves fruit sunburnt and tasteless. Water in the morning, never wet the foliage, keep the full 90–120 cm spacing for airflow, and remove the worst-affected leaves early. Sit each developing fruit on a tile or upturned pot so it never rests on damp soil.
