Sow sunflowers direct from September through March in the arid zone, 8–12 mm deep. Germination is usually brisk in warm soil — anywhere from 6 to 21 days — and flowers arrive 80–100 days later, so even a January sowing in Mildura finishes comfortably before winter. Sunflowers are natural dry-country plants: a deep taproot hunts moisture well below the surface, and the intense inland sun produces thick stems and outsized heads. Spacing is your main design decision — 20 cm apart for a massed screen of smaller blooms, out to 60 cm for fewer, larger heads.

Few flowers are better matched to arid gardens. Once the taproot is down, an established sunflower tolerates heat that flattens most ornamentals, and low humidity means rust and mildew rarely take hold. The vulnerable period is the first month: seed and seedlings sit in the top few centimetres of soil, exactly the layer that a Port Augusta northerly can dry out by lunchtime. Water the row daily until plants are knee-high, then shift to deep soakings once or twice a week to pull that taproot downward — frequent shallow watering later in life builds a shallow-rooted plant that lodges in the first storm.

Wind is the defining hazard inland. Tall varieties carrying full heads act as sails, so sow on the sheltered side of a fence where possible and stake anything over head height. Snapped stems in a squall are the most common failure after establishment; the second is disappearing seed — mice, ants and cockatoos all take freshly sown sunflower seed, so sow a little thickly at 8–12 mm and net or trap if a row vanishes.

The plant is rated hardy, but the sowing window is honest about what it wants: warm soil. Early September sowings in Alice Springs germinate slowly and unevenly in cold ground; waiting two or three weeks usually means later sowings overtake them anyway.
