Sweet corn sows direct in the arid zone from September through March — spring, summer and early autumn — at 15–25 mm deep and 20–30 cm apart, planted in blocks rather than single rows so wind can do its pollinating work. It is frost tender, so the window opens once the last cold nights have passed and closes early enough for the 80–120 day season to beat the first autumn frosts inland. Germination is quick in warm soil at 6–12 days, and in irrigated dry-country gardens around Mildura, corn grows fast, tall and remarkably well.

Corn is one of the arid zone's more natural fits — it loves heat and sun — but it is also the thirstiest crop on this page, and there is no low-water version of success. A tall block transpires enormous volumes on a 40 °C day, so plan on deep watering every two to three days at the height of summer, 75–100 mm of mulch across the whole block, and soil improved with compost beforehand so it can actually hold what you pour in.

Timing within the window has a real edge to it. Kernels set poorly when extreme heat coincides with tasseling, so the strongest plantings are September–October sowings that silk before the January furnace, or January–February sowings that finish in autumn's kinder weather; a mid-November sowing in Alice Springs will often tassel straight into the hottest fortnight of the year. At the autumn end, count backward — a March sowing needs its full 80–120 days before these frost-tender plants meet the first cold snap.

The classic failure is patchy, half-filled cobs, and in the desert it is nearly always pollination: hot dry wind desiccating pollen, or a long thin row planted instead of a block. Sow at least four rows square, and on still mornings shake the tassels by hand to help pollen find the silks.
