Sweet corn direct-sows from January right through to November in the tropical zone — only December, the heart of the monsoon, is off the calendar. Seed goes in 15–25 mm deep and is up within six to twelve days, with cobs ready 80–120 days later. Darwin and Mackay growers plant in blocks of at least four short rows rather than one long one, because corn is wind-pollinated and a single row fills its cobs patchily. Sow 20–30 cm apart in rows 50–90 cm apart, and plan the block before you open the seed packet.

Corn is one of the few sweet crops that genuinely does not mind tropical heat, which is why the window runs eleven months. The seasonal question is water and wind rather than temperature. Dry-season sowings (May to August) need committed irrigation — corn is thirsty, especially from tasselling onwards, and a water-stressed block at silking fills half a cob. Wet-season sowings get free water and rocket along, but tall plants plus monsoon squalls mean lodging: hill soil up around the stem bases as plants grow, plant blocks rather than exposed single rows, and in storm-prone spots around Mackay stagger several small wet-season plantings so one blow cannot take the lot.

Feed generously — corn is a heavy nitrogen feeder, unusual among tropical staples — with compost before sowing and a nitrogen side-dressing at knee height. The classic failure is cobs with scattered missing kernels, and it is nearly always poor pollination: a long single row, or heavy rain washing pollen out during silking. Sow in a block at 20–30 cm spacing, and on still mornings you can shake the tassels by hand to help pollen fall onto the silks. Harvest when silks are brown and dry and kernels squirt milky juice under a thumbnail; in tropical heat the peak-sweetness window is short, so check the block daily once silks start to brown.
